AC Filter Cleaning
If you’re ready to start taking care of this yourself, here’s a step-by-step guide.
Locate and Remove the AC Filter
Before starting, you’ll need to turn off the unit and locate the filter.
Depending on the model, you may have to unscrew and detach a grill in the very front of the unit. The filter will be just behind the grill. Some models have a door that lifts up easily.
Once you’ve found the AC filter, carefully pull it out. Look for any rips or serious damage. If you see any of this, you shouldn’t continue with the cleaning. You’ll need to replace it with a new one.
Vacuum Your Filter
If your filter is still in good shape, you can now use the hose of your vacuum to remove any lint, dust, or other debris. It’s important to vacuum both sides and be as thorough as possible.
Be careful while your vacuuming, as tearing the filter will render it unusable.
Remove Excess Dirt if Needed
If you’ve vacuumed but still noticed dirt and grime, you’ll need to wash it with soap and warm water. You can use a mild dishwashing detergent and a soft cloth to gently scrub away the buildup that the vacuum can’t get.
Sanitize
To sanitize your AC filter, use a solution of water and vinegar in equal portions. Add this to a tub or plastic bin that’s big enough to submerge the filter in.
Soaking it in this solution for several minutes helps kill any allergens or bacteria embedded in the fibers.
Drain and Dry
After you’ve soaked the filter thoroughly, remove it from the solution and let all the moisture drain off. It’s not necessary to rinse the filter with water, as you may end up damaging it.
After it’s drained, place it on a towel and let it dry completely.
Replace the Filter
After it’s dry and you’re happy with the cleanliness, it’s time to slide it back into the housing and close the door or grating on the outside of the unit.
You can then turn your AC back on and enjoy the cleaner, cooler air.
Keep Your AC Filter Clean All Year
Keeping your air conditioner in good shape increases its longevity and also improves the air quality in your home. Taking the proper steps to maintain your unit also results in lower monthly energy bills.
If it’s been a while since you’ve had a look at your filter, it’s probably time for a cleaning. Follow the steps above and get it done fast.
